Dodge Neon
| | Model of the car: | Dodge Neon | | | General comments: | I've only had the car for 2.5 years, but so far it's been great. I love the five-speed transmission and the powerful engine - this car is loads of fun to drive. It's also quite roomy and gas mileage is decent (even with a heavy foot like mine). I would recommend it to anyone looking for a small four-door sedan for city or highway use - just check the head gasket very carefully before buying (or better yet, try to get one with the redesigned MLS gasket). If you like driving, stay away from the automatic - it's a three-speed, and it sucks the life out of the car (I drove an automatic rental for a week a couple of years ago). | | | What things have gone wrong with the car: | So far, the only problem I've had is the exhaust donut had to be replaced (under warranty), however, I've heard that the head gasket is a notorious weak point on the 95-98 model years (it was supposedly fixed early in the 99 model year). Other than that, the engine is a bit noisy and unrefined, the headlights aren't very bright, the rear windows only roll about half way down (and they don't have power controls, even if the car is equipped with power windows), and the frameless doors make for some additional wind noise at highway speeds. Fifth gear on the manual is just a bit too tall, and necessitates a down-shift for any passing or hill-climbing (but there's plenty of power on tap if you keep the engine in its powerband). | | | Previous car: | Honda Civic - very refined by comparison, smoother engine, much better resale value, very reliable, not nearly as fast, not as fun to drive |
